Salam, I’m Abeer ul Haq Usmani, an experienced Clinical Psychologist and psychoeducationist helping people in the Islamabad, Pakistan in person and globally via online consultation.  As a Psychologist, I believe we are all born with the potential for growth, and the capacity to embrace change.

Our capacity for growth is nurtured through relationships. Firstly with our parents and siblings, then through friendships, as our world shifts from the home, into education, and finally work.  Likewise, people come to counselling seeking to grow and develop through the relationship with their therapist.

Central to therapy is a helping conversation with someone who offers understanding, acceptance, and honesty. Being truly heard, sometimes for the very first time, allows us to ease off our burdens, and begin walking with a lighter step.

Sometimes we know where we are going,
other times we just want things to be different.
Talking to someone can help us work out
where we want to go and how to get there

Background

I was born and grew up in Karachi, and have lived and worked in the local area. I attended University at Karachi and Islamabad, and now live in Islamabad. Prior to becoming a Psychologist, I learned SEN education from British Council and worked with students with a learning and emotional needs in the A Levels Collage in Karachi. I also have worked closely with young people for community interventions to counter violent extremism with UNFPA and State Departments in Pakistan.

For formal clinical psychology experience, I received clinical training  from Institute of Behaviour Sciences – DOW University of Health Sciences and  worked in Psychology OPD & drugs and psychopathology rehabilitation unit. Now, along with my clinical practice and research, I also hold the position of CEO of Three Thirteen– Institute for Applied Psychology and Community Interventions.

Journey

When I was a child, I decided I wanted to be a media practitioner or pilot, rather than a doctor or an engineer. And while I never became any of those things, I did end up working with people with a emotional and social challenges. To start with I believed that this group of people were somehow different than me.

After a time, I noticed we shared many things in common, and in particular a need for fulfilling relationships with others. Then I began to notice that while the label may stay the same, each person I met had their own unique way of going about things.

So when I began working with adolescents, I noticed energy and creativity, and also this same sense of uniqueness; sometimes trying to work out a place in the world, sometimes how to cope, and sometimes how to have fulfilling relationships with others. I have come to believe that if there is one thing we all have in common, it’s that each of us is unique.

Change comes from
embracing who we are,
rather than by trying to
become something we are not.

Therapy is…

A space where you can speak openly and feel understood without judgment. I offer a calm, respectful presence so you can slow things down, make sense of what you’re carrying, and begin to feel less overwhelmed. Being heard in this way often brings clarity and a sense of relief.

My work is guided by a biopsychosocial approach, which means we look at the full picture—your thoughts and emotions, physical well-being, relationships, and the context of your life. This helps us understand how different factors interact and shape your experience, rather than reducing it to a single cause.

Together, we explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck and work toward more flexible, realistic ways of responding. The focus is not just on insight, but on helping you feel more balanced, aware, and able to move forward in a way that fits your life.
